Festivals and Events

The Nice Carnival is the top winter event on the French Riviera. The city comes alive during a fortnight of festivities, with carnival processions, elegant flower parades, prestige soirées, rock and dance concerts, entertainment and fireworks, attracting over a million spectators.

Music flows from every street corner and huge papier mâché characters with giant heads parade through the city centre - some on floats, some dancing with the crowds on the streets.

The centre stage for events is the Place Masséna. Here, carnival motifs are painted onto backdrops of illuminated panels. Competitions are judged, among them the spectacle of the Bataille des Fleurs, a huge parade of flowers accompanied by marching bands and twirling majorettes.

Shrove Tuesday sees the culmination of the parade as the papier mâché giants dance their last dance and their carnival king is taken down to the beach on his throne. There, he is ceremonially set alight, bringing the carnival to a close.
