Museums. Chief amongst the many are The Matisse up in Cimiez – a bus ride from Jean Jaures, (though check as some renovation in progress this year) (Bus NO 17 from Massena Zone Pietonée) The Chagall behind the station – quite small, and mainly Chagall’s biblical paintings, and the larger Beaux Arts, about 15 minutes walk west from the apartment – Dufy, some Picasso and more general works.


Nice is a city of art and culture and after Paris, has the most museums in France.  Artists, sculptors, photographers, potters and a myriad of crafts people have galleries and studios open the year round.

Nice is France’s fifth largest city, and has developed a reputation for the number and excellence of its museums and galleries. Amongst these are:

Music is well represented, with the Opera House close to the Old Town, running  both Opera, ballet  and Symphony concerts on a regular basis. (Opera de Nice- 04 92 17 40 40


Nikaia is Nice’s main large modern concert hall, close to the airport, with concerts by David Bowie, Robbie Williams and many internationally known groups during 2003.  (  04 92 29 31 12


Théâtre National de Nice runs mainly French language plays, but also has Shakespeare and other English language productions.  04 93 13 90 90


Jazz is well represented at the jazz festival in July (see Events), with many other live events in bars in the old town.
